Cat Autumn Care Guide

September - November

Autumn is a pleasant season, but your cat's body is already preparing for winter. From coat changes and increased appetite to shorter daylight hours, here are the key care points to keep in mind during September through November.

Autumn Care Points

Winter Coat Transition

In autumn, the summer coat gives way to a thicker winter undercoat. While shedding is lighter than in spring, regular brushing 2-3 times per week prevents hairballs and supports healthy new coat growth. Check the skin for dryness or flaking during grooming sessions.

Weight Management During Appetite Increase

Cats naturally eat more in autumn to prepare for winter. While this is normal, overfeeding leads to obesity, which increases the risk of diabetes, joint disease, and heart problems. Measure daily food portions, keep treats under 10% of total calories, and weigh your cat weekly. Use the Body Condition Score (BCS) to monitor body shape.

Fall Health Check Recommendation

Autumn is ideal for vet checkups because clinics are less crowded. Schedule blood tests, urinalysis, and X-rays to catch hidden conditions early. Senior cats (7+) should have checkups twice a year. Include a dental exam, as periodontal disease is common and often goes unnoticed until advanced stages.

Dry Air Preparation

Air starts getting dry in late autumn, causing skin problems (flaking, itching) and respiratory discomfort in cats. Use a humidifier to keep indoor humidity at 50-60%. Foods or supplements rich in omega-3 fatty acids support skin and coat health from the inside out.

Indoor Enrichment

Shorter daylight hours reduce your cat's natural activity levels. Lack of exercise leads to obesity and stress, so create dedicated play time. Cat towers, tunnels, and food puzzles keep the environment stimulating. Aim for 15-20 minutes of interactive play daily, varying the pace to mimic hunting behavior.

Autumn Danger Signs to Watch For

  • Rapid weight gain (500g+ in one month)
  • Dull coat with no shine
  • Over-grooming to the point of visible skin

If you notice any of these signs, consult a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Autumn Care Checklist

  • Weigh your cat weekly and record it
  • Schedule a fall health checkup
  • Prepare and maintain a humidifier
  • Set up a cat tower or puzzle toys
  • Review and adjust food portions
