Feline Quality-of-Life Tool 'FelQoL' Scientifically Validated (July 2026): How to Read What Cats Hide
The Feline Quality of Life (FelQoL) questionnaire was scientifically validated in July 2026 and published in a veterinary journal, developed from 1,324 cat owners in the US and UK. What it measures, and how to apply it to everyday cat care.

A New Tool to Measure Feline Quality of Life — 'FelQoL' — Has Been Validated
On July 1, 2026, a new questionnaire for assessing a cat's physical and emotional wellbeing — its quality of life (QoL) — was scientifically validated and published in two parts in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery.
The tool, called FelQoL (Feline Quality of Life), was developed by a team from the Waltham Petcare Science Institute, Mars Veterinary Health, Royal Canin, and the University of Bristol. Built from data on 1,324 cat owners in the United States and the United Kingdom, it is designed to evaluate how a cat's age, health status, and environment shape its quality of life, across both physical and emotional dimensions.
Janet Patterson-Kane of Mars Science & Diagnostics noted that cats are well known for being difficult to read, which is exactly why FelQoL is such an important development for veterinary professionals and owners alike. The tool is designed to be pet owner-friendly and is already being used in research through the Mars Petcare Biobank.

Why Making Quality of Life Visible Matters So Much
Cats instinctively hide signs of illness, and changes in pain or condition often do not show up clearly in behavior. Relying on a caregiver's impression alone tends to stop at a vague sense that something is off — and by the time it is obvious, the problem may already have advanced.
A validated framework like FelQoL is valuable because it separates quality of life into a physical side (appetite, water intake, activity, grooming, mobility) and an emotional side (sense of security, interaction with people and other cats, calmness, reaction to change), and lets you track shifts over time. Instead of a simple well/unwell binary, you can catch small declines in specific areas.
For senior cats and those with chronic conditions in particular, catching a slight drop in QoL early can inform when to bring forward a regular health check, or the difficult question of how to think about end-of-life care.
Reading Quality of Life at Home, Starting Today
FelQoL itself is a research and clinical tool, but its logic applies directly to everyday monitoring at home. The key is to separate the dimensions, track continuously, and rely on records rather than memory.
| Dimension | Signs to watch at home |
|---|---|
| Physical (eating) | Appetite, water intake, changes in how they eat |
| Physical (activity) | Movement, ability to jump/handle steps, grooming |
| Physical (appearance) | Weight, coat condition, eyes and mouth |
| Emotional (security) | How often they hide, calmness, sleep |
| Emotional (interaction) | Changes in how they engage with people or other cats |
As a rule of thumb, if you see a decline in two or more dimensions lasting one to two weeks, consider a vet visit. What matters is judging change against last week through records, not impressions — photos, weight, and behavior logs let you convey changes to your vet accurately.
Tracking Your Cat's Quality of Life with CatsMe
What the FelQoL research shows is that a cat's quality of life is not a matter of vague impressions — tracked continuously across separate dimensions, it can genuinely be read. That is exactly where everyday monitoring has value.
CatsMe is designed to fold this kind of continuous monitoring into daily life without effort — through a one-photo AI health check, logs of condition and behavior, and vet-ready reports. No special expertise is needed; the accumulation of ordinary photos and notes becomes the foundation for noticing change early.
