Hepatic Lipidosis in Cats

A potentially fatal liver disease unique to cats, triggered by 2-3+ days of not eating. Fat accumulates excessively in the liver. Obese cats that suddenly stop eating require emergency care.

Symptoms

  • Complete appetite loss
  • Jaundice
  • Vomiting
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Lethargy

Causes

  • Fasting for 2-3+ days
  • Obesity
  • Stress
  • Underlying disease (diabetes, pancreatitis)

Treatment

  • Force feeding via nasal/esophageal tube
  • Fluid therapy
  • Liver-protective medication
  • Treatment of underlying disease

Prognosis

Early aggressive treatment yields 60-80% survival, but delayed treatment is often fatal.

Prevention

  • Avoid rapid weight loss in obese cats
  • See a vet if appetite loss lasts 2+ days
  • Stress management
