First Cat-Specific Blood Pressure Drug Approved — and the FDA File Shows Why Catching It Late Costs Vision
On April 29, 2026 the FDA approved AMODIP (amlodipine besylate chewable tablets, Ceva) — the first cat-specific drug for systemic hypertension in cats. In the field study systolic pressure fell 28.2 mmHg on average by Day 28. But the same FDA file notes that cats whose vision was already severely lost at treatment start were less likely to regain it even after the retina reattached. What Was Approved
One day your cat starts walking into the furniture. She does not look at you when you call. Her pupils stay wide open.
That is how most owners find out their cat has high blood pressure — and by then, she can no longer see.
For that problem, a medicine made for cats has been approved for the first time: a chewable tablet cleared by the US regulator (FDA) on April 29, 2026 (AMODIP, from Ceva). Until now vets had to split human tablets; this is the first version designed for cats.
How well does it work? In a study of 77 cats already diagnosed with high blood pressure, some were given the drug and some were not. After one month, blood pressure had come down to target in two out of three treated cats (64.1%), against roughly one in six of the others (17.6%). The pressure itself fell by 28.2 points on average, versus 9.9 in the untreated group.
Side effects included vomiting, loss of appetite and low energy, and 11 of the 77 cats stopped treatment because of them. It works — but it is not a medicine you give and forget.

Feline Hypertension Travels With Kidney Disease — and Shows You Nothing at Home
Systemic hypertension in cats is usually not a stand-alone disease. It typically arises secondary to chronic kidney disease (CKD) or hyperthyroidism. The trap is that high pressure damages the kidneys further, so kidney disease drives hypertension and hypertension drives kidney disease — a loop.
Kidney disease is the leading cause of death in cats, affecting roughly 81% of cats over 15. So hypertension is not a niche problem; it sits right beside the main battleground of senior cat health.
And at home, you see nothing.
A cat with high blood pressure does not act unwell or hold its head. What owners usually notice first is this:
- One day the cat starts bumping into furniture
- The pupils stay dilated
- It no longer meets your eyes when you call
That is retinal detachment from high pressure — vision has already been lost. The moment you notice is not the moment it starts; it is the moment an organ has already broken. Beyond the eyes, hypertension damages the brain, heart and kidneys at the same time.
The Real Story Is One Sentence in the FDA File
Something heavier than the approval itself sits in the same FDA file — a summary of a published study that followed 225 cats for a year:
Cats that had severe fundic lesions and severely decreased or absent vision at the start of treatment were less likely to regain visual function, despite retinal reattachment and improvement in retinal hemorrhages.
This is not "the drug does not work." In that study, treatment did improve the fundic lesions — the target-organ damage. It is that some cats were in time and some were not.
Pressure can be lowered. The retina can be physically reattached. Lost time cannot be given back.
It is exactly the shape of yesterday's study on early renal diets: cats started early were 41–46% less likely to progress. And of the AIM drug FeliAIM now under review: greatest benefit at stages 1–2, limited at end-stage.
More tools keep arriving, but only the cats found early can use them. Kidney disease and blood pressure point the same way.
What To Do Now: Start by Asking for the Measurement
Measuring a cat's blood pressure takes a few minutes at the clinic. A small cuff goes on a front leg or the tail; it does not hurt. Because cats tense up (white-coat effect), the standard is several readings in a quiet room, averaged.
How to ask for it:
1. From age 7, have blood pressure measured on the same visit as bloodwork. A separate appointment gets forgotten
2. If your cat already has kidney disease or hyperthyroidism, measure regardless of age
3. Take the numbers home. Blood pressure is read as a trend, not a single value
4. Once a month, deliberately look at the eyes — pupil size, whether the cat is bumping into things
If treatment starts, watch for this:
In the FDA target-animal safety study (32 healthy cats, 6 months), every treated cat developed dose- and time-dependent gingival hyperplasia — swollen gums — beginning at weeks 10 to 12. That is startling if nobody warned you, and the inside of the mouth is not somewhere owners routinely look. Once a month, lift the lip and check the gums, and raise anything unusual with your vet.
The same study also saw decreases in serum creatinine and potassium alongside the drop in pressure (all within normal ranges) — which is another way of saying bloodwork does not stop once medication starts.
